Dr. Joe Kowal grew up in Indiana and obtained his undergraduate and veterinary degrees from Purdue University. He then completed an internship and Neurology/Neurosurgery residency at the University of Missouri. He is interested in novel and minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques.

In December 2022, Dr. Kowal received his Neurosurgery Certificate of Training. This certificate documents that the recipient has completed advanced neurosurgical training beyond that required for board certification and has completed a minimum number of surgical procedures. Additionally, the recipient must document exposure to and proficiency in advanced neurosurgery. The process for approval is subject to an audit of cases to ensure that the recipient meets all criteria. This certification allows Dr. Kowal to join a select group of neurologists across the country who have completed this advanced training. 

Outside of work Dr. Kowal enjoys fly fishing, backpacking, and generally being outdoors which is what drew him to the PNW. He has an orange tabby named Curry.
